St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Minneapolis

This congregation traces its history back to a Lutheran missionary who organized a Sunday School at West Broadway and 6th Street North in 1890. However, when the missionary left, the Sunday School was abandoned for ten years until 1902 when he returned and a church was organized.  For several months meetings were held in a small hall over a grocery store at Lyndale and 26th Avenue North until the congregation moved to Fairview Chapel located at 6th Street and 26th Ave. North.  A small frame church was erected in 1903 (location unknown) and sold twenty years later in order to erect a larger brick church with a seating capacity of 350 located on 25th Street and Newton Avenue North; it was dedicated on January 6, 1924. The church, which had five members when it was organized, is listed as having over 500 members in 1936.
