Hope Chapel

Westminster Presbyterian Church was also part of the American Home Missionary Society’s effort to reach out to recently arrived immigrants. Besides establishing the Fifth Presbyterian Church for its members who had moved into the Oak Lake Addition, Westminster also established Hope Chapel in 1882, located at 3rd Street and 9th Avenue North.  The Chapel provided a kindergarten for all neighborhood children, regardless of their religion, but unlike Unity Settlement House it was also the aim of Hope Chapel to become the church home of the “common” people and to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ (Hope Bulletin, October 1896, p. 6). In 1903, the Chapel was moved to 20th Avenue North and Washington, where it remained until it closed in 1920.
