Fourth Baptist Church

In July 1874, about twenty members of First Baptist Church, and a few other Baptists, met in a home located on 11th Ave. N., in Gale’s Second Addition, with the purpose of organizing a Sunday School. In November 1874, a chapel erected by the Baptist Union at 1819 11th Avenue N., was dedicated and given to the group by S. A. Jewitt for whom it is named. Six years later a wing was added to the building to house the growing numbers attending the Sunday School. In 1881 a decision was made to form a church that was given the name, The Fourth Baptist Church.  A three-story brick building was erected at 18th Avenue N. and Dupont that remained in use until a second church with a seating capacity of 800 was erected at 2105 Fremont Avenue N. in 1922. By 1974, a new 2,000 seat auditorium was added to accommodate the growing congregation. In 1998, the congregation relocated to the suburb of Plymouth.
