First German Baptist

Services were first held by a group of German immigrants living on Minneapolis’ north side in 1884. The following year the congregation was organized as First German Baptist Church and affiliated with the German Baptist Church of North America. There were 35 charter members who met initially in the Jewett Chapel of the Fourth Baptist Church on Lyndale and 11th Ave. North and later in the Fourth Baptist Church at 18th and Emerson Avenues North. The land was purchased at 712 West Broadway in 1885 and a frame church was erected on the site. It was in use until 1905 when it was demolished and a brick building erected in its place. There were 155 members in the congregation in 1938. The building has since been demolished.
