Trinity First Evangelical Lutheran Church (German), Minneapolis

Established on August 27, 1856, this German congregation became the mother church of all Missouri Synod churches in the city. The congregation initially met in homes and later in the United States Land Office Building. They also met in other buildings until 1867 when they erected a church at 4th Street and 9th Avenue. In 1870, the congregation erected a frame school building next to this church and two years later a parsonage. All of these buildings were enlarged over the years. In 1903 they moved to a new brick church at 1115 19th Street South. As the primary Missouri Synod church, Trinity First sponsored Immanuel Lutheran Church as a mission at 22nd and Girard Avenue North, erecting a frame building for that congregation in 1889. They also sponsored Mount Olive Church at 31st and Chicago Avenues, erecting a church and school in 1909, and Christ Church at 34th and 33rd Street South.  The congregation held its services in German until about 1867.
