Christ Lutheran Church (formerly Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church)

Organized by a group of Norwegian Lutherans in 1868, this congregation was incorporated under the name the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Saint Paul.  Initially, services were held in homes of members, the old courthouse, and in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.  The congregation erected its first church in 1870 on the SW corner of L’Orient and Mt. Airy Streets.  The land, however, proved to be unstable and the building was moved five years later to the corner of 13th and Canada Streets.  That building was sold to Immanuel Lutheran Church of the Hauge School And moved to the NW corner of 14th and Canada Streets.  Christ Church Lutheran then erected a larger church on the vacated site.  This building was ultimately sold to the Sons of Moses Synagogue in 1911, and the land was purchased at 105 W. University Avenue where the present church was constructed and dedicated in 1915.  Designed by the architectural firm of Buechner and Orth, the twin-towered yellow brick church with white stone trim is in the Beaux-Arts style that borrows from Renaissance and Classical sources seen particularly in its façade where a pediment is supported by a pair of colossal Ionic columns.
